"So much to do, so little time," or thoughts to that effect, is a time-worn refrain that is on the mind of many visitors to incredible Grand Strand of the north coast of South Carolina.  With so many places to visit and an abundance of activities to participate, many people with an adventurous spirit that love the outdoors are wanting to escape the many fast-paced attractions of the greater Myrtle Beach area.

Kayaking, if only for a few hours, is the perfect getaway to satisfy their needs.

Keep calm and paddle on!

3.5 Hours

Adults - 13 & Up

Children - 12 & Under

Lucy's Kayaking Adventures offers a wonderful three and half hour opportunity to enjoy the sport of kayaking while visiting Waties Island, a coastal barrier island located between Cherry Grove and Little River Inlets.   Let the outgoing tides help you paddle down the waterway towards the Atlantic Ocean, much like the Native-American Waccamaw tribe did in their dugout canoes over 500 years ago.  View Cherry Grove beach with its many sunbathers on your right as you are captivated by the pristine, natural beauty of Waties Island on your left.

After paddling to shore on Waties Island, you are offered the opportunity to explore the island with all its unspoiled, natural beauty.  Thanks to the conservation efforts by the Tilghman family, owners of the island, and Coastal Carolina University, that utilizes the barrier island as an ecological research facility, you, too, can view Waccamaw tribal burial mounds and perhaps find an artifact or two.  Or you can just simply lay back on the beach and soak in the sun, the sand, the ocean and the flora and fauna of this over one-thousand-acre barrier island.

Your return trip is now aided by the incoming tides as you paddle by the marshes inhabited by Osprey, Blue Herons, Ducks and other water fowl, as well as an occasional Bald Eagle sighting.

Trip begins and ends at Cherry Grove Boat Landing at 53rd Ave N in Cherry Grove, South Carolina.

As you journey ends, be sure to have a conversation with Cathy and meet her ever-present K-9 companion Lucy and ask her for a great recommendation for dinner that night.

The Waccamaw River adventure is approximately 2.5 to 3 hrs. long depending on the number kayaks we have scheduled for that day.  Waccamaw River Low Country is a great escape from the crowded beaches, it’s considered one of the finest black-water river in the southeast.

The river originates from Lake Waccamaw in North Carolina and runs approximately 140 nautical miles when it ends in Georgetown, South Carolina and merges with the Inter coastal waterway and then the Atlantic Ocean.

Your adventure will begin kayaking down the Blue River Trail which is an all-natural Heritage Reserve.  It’s the perfect escape from the noise of the crowds to enjoy a peaceful and tranquil river journey.  During your tour you will see Cypress, Atlantic White Cedar trees and a variety of birds that migrate to the swampy area to nest.  Most popular are Egrets, Woodpeckers, Herons, Barrel Owls, Coopers Hawks and the Yellow Throat Warbler.  But there are many, many more varieties to see.

Depending on the season, the White Ibises comes once a year to nest in the Cypress trees along the banks of the Waccamaw.  With all types of wildlife abundant we could venture upon Wild Boars, Whitetail Deer, Wild Turkeys, Turtles, River Otters, and much more.

Fishing is also available catfish, brim, and large-mouth bass are most common.

After you park your car or truck at Chris Anderson Landing, off of Highway #9 in Longs, South Carolina, your adventure begins with a quick transport to historic Wortham's Ferry Landing.  From here you will launch your kayak and return back to Chris Anderson Landing just in time for a great dinner at one of the many restaurants in the Myrtle Beach area.

From Cherry Grove Boat Landing, you will adventure out through the pristine salt marsh channels of Cherry Grove.

Cherry Grove Boat Landing Map and Directions

Observing birds such as Blue Herons, Egrets, Eagles, Osprey, Ducks, Salt Marsh Hens, Herring Gull, Oyster Catchers, Black Skimmers, and Brown Pelicans.   Also be on the lookout for Loggerhead Sea Turtles, Diamond Back Terrapin (turtle), Otters and Atlantic Bottle Nose Dolphins.

Salt marshes are a vital part of the coastal ecosystem. Together with wetlands, marshes act as biological filters where pollutants from freshwater runoff can settle out before reaching the Atlantic Ocean. Decaying vegetation from the marsh provides adjoining bays with food from many small marine animals. These, in turn, are food for fish, mammals and birds. Marshes also serve as spawning grounds and nursery for marine animals including shrimp, blue crabs and red drum.

This is a great beginner kayaking trip getting to see the South Carolina coastline and all that it has to offer.

Bring your camera and capture the magic.
